DHS Ends Temporary Protected Status for 9,000 Afghanis

The secretary said that conditions “no longer prevent them from returning to their home country.”

Secretary Kristi Noem announced this week that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is ending the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for 9,000 Afghanistan nationals living in the United States. The program is now set to expire on May 20, and its full elimination is scheduled for July 12.

Secretary Noem stated that the department determined that permitting Afghan nationals to remain temporarily in the United States “is contrary to the national interest of the United States.”

“This administration is returning TPS to its original temporary intent,” the DHS secretary said. “We’ve reviewed the conditions in Afghanistan with our interagency partners, and they do not meet the requirements for a TPS designation. Afghanistan has had an improved security situation, and its stabilizing economy no longer prevent them from returning to their home country.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for Secretary Noem and DHS officials as they review the TPS status for multiple nations.
  • For President Trump and members of his administration as they seek to enforce immigration laws and promote national security.
